Geshi (夏至) is one of the 24 seasonal divisions (Sekki) in the traditional Japanese calendar.
It usually falls between June 21 and July 6, marking the longest days of the year in Japan.
The sun reaches its highest point in the sky, rice fields grow greener, and the landscape is filled with the energy of early summer.
At the same time, the rainy season continues, bringing lush growth to fields, gardens, and forests.
It is a season that celebrates both abundance and light.
The Three Micro-Seasons of Geshi
In Japan's traditional calendar, each of the 24 seasonal divisions is further divided into three micro-seasons known as Shichijūni-kō.
Geshi includes the following three micro-seasons:
- Natsukarekusa Karuru (乃東枯)
- Ayame Hana Saku (菖蒲華)
- Hangeshōzu (半夏生)
Each lasts only a few days, capturing subtle changes in nature during the height of early summer.
